  • What This Site Is About

Beekeeping is changing!  Miticide-resistant varroa, collapsing colonies, and the shift of the industry from honey to pollination income are forcing us to rethink every aspect of colony husbandry.  The forward-looking beekeeper needs good, hard facts to plan his management strategy.

Most beekeepers don’t have the time to read the scientific research and analyze the data for practical application, or to sort through the pages of chat, opinion, and conjecture found in the bee magazines and on the Web.

On this site I hope to provide the progressive beekeeper with readable summaries of current worldwide scientific research on various topics.  I will also offer practical suggestions based upon my own experience (I run a 500-colony migratory operation in California), and that of other successful and innovative beekeepers.

If you are a hobby beekeeper, and just want the "quick answer" of how to manage varroa without synthetic chemicals, then I suggest that you go to "Varroa Management," and read the following articles: Strategy, Biotechnical II, and Oxalic Acid Questions.

  • Support This Site

Many beekeepers have requested reprints of my articles from the American Bee Journal.  Since I wish to update each article regularly, I feel that online access would allow them to remain current, and allow me to incorporate feedback from readers. Please feel free to donate to help with the costs of maintaining this site. My guess is that the accurate information, new ideas, and practical advice on these pages will return any investment many times over in the form of healthier colonies and increased production.

I am also running field trials to collect needed data for alternative mite control, and better pollen supplements. Taking colonies out of production is costly, as is the hiring of assistants. I am happy to accept donations to help cover the costs of research.
